One significant thing to note before discussing the consumption of this amazing plant is that even though Kratom is currently legal to purchase, possess and distribute in most of the US, it is still not approved for internal use by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and therefore can only be lawfully sold “without directions or claims” for things like incense, aromatherapy and craft/soap-making.

Because of this, you’ll notice numerous vendors and Kratom users mention “burning” rather than “drinking” and “aroma” rather than “effects” or “feelings”. So, when somebody says “I burned 4 grams of Kratom and it had an extremely calming aroma” this translates to “I consumed 4 grams of Kratom and it made me feel extremely calm.”

If you’re new to the wonderful world of Kratom, the use of these different words can be confusing at first, but it’s simply a legality and the lingo is easy to understand once familiar.

Although there are many different methods that can be used when it comes to consuming Kratom, I will stick to describing the top 3 techniques in this guide: Toss and Wash, Blending It Up and Kratom Tea.

Toss and Wash

This is unquestionably the fastest and most effortless technique out there. Just measure out your perfect dose, throw the powder in your mouth, take a big drink of water, swish it around in your mouth and swallow. That’s it!

When using the toss and wash method, I try to place the scoops directly on my tongue while keeping the powder “in tact”. This makes the process of washing it down smooth and easy.

Blending It Up

Despite the fact that this technique requires somewhat more planning, it is really effective for covering up the natural bitterness of plain Kratom powder. It can definitely be worth the trouble, depending on your particular sensitivity to taste and texture. Fill a glass with either water, your most loved juice or even a protein shake (chocolate is an incredible choice for covering up bitterness), measure out your perfect dose, pour it into your refreshment and mix thoroughly. Because natural Kratom powder doesn’t blend too well, you’ll want to give the solution a very strong stir. Shaker bottles are amazing for this and make things a lot easier.

Kratom Tea

This is definitely one of the most tedious approaches to consuming Kratom, but at the same time it’s also one of my top choices. Because you’ll be boiling the Kratom in hot water and discarding the leftover powder, not only does this remove the bitter taste experienced when ingesting plain powder, but it also eases my mind because I know that what I’m putting into my body has been totally sterilized by the boil.

To begin, you’ll want a pot, a filter (any cheesecloth, coffee filter or other strainer will do), water and a stove to heat things up.

  1. Begin by heating 12 ounces of water until there is a very slight boil. (Optional: Toss in a lime or lemon slice before heating. Not only can this add a boost of flavor to your tea, but the acids will help to ensure the alkaloids in the Kratom are protected from the heat.)
  2. Pour your pre-measured serving of Kratom powder right into the bubbling water and delicately blend.
  3. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes.
  4. Once the shade of the liquid turns to a dark, yellowish orange, remove the pot from the warmth.
  5. Place the strainer over your cup and pour the tea in, separating the powder from the liquid.
  6. Now you can dispose of the powder gathered by the strainer.

You are now able to drink the tea as-is or mix in some some sugar, honey, cinnamon or whatever else you may like. Feel free to sip the hot tea or add some ice for a cool treat. Kratom tea can be stored in the refrigerator for around 3 days before losing potency.
